Author. Richard Vetterli was an American author of the 20th century. In 1959 he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Brigham Young University; a Masters degree in Political Science from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1961, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California at Riverside in 1972. He was a professor at Pepperdine University and Pasadena City College before becoming a professor of Political Science at Brigham Young University in 1979, staying until his death. He received the coveted Student Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Brigham Young University Political Science Department several times through his career. He wrote two biographies on Utah Senator Orrin Hatch: "Orrin Hatch Challenging the Washington Establishment" in 1982 and co-authored with Brad E. Hainworth, "The Lion's Den: The Story of Senator Orrin Hatch" in 1995. He authored five Political Science college-level textbooks covering the subjects of the founding of American democracy, publics virtue, and the philosophical and spiritual roots of government. In 1991 he co-authored with Emmy-winning character actor, Leo V. Gordon, the historical novel "Powderkeg," which was set in the 19th century in Utah Territory and then to the halls of Congress and the office of United States President James Buchanan. The screen rights of the novel were purchased by Warner Brother Studios. He was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as a bishop. He married and had two children.
